Luxury Watch

What is that much in a watch that widens range of its cost from as low as even less than one dollar to as high as more than one hundred thousand dollars or even few million dollars? What is missing in a cheaper watch and what is there enjoyable with an expensive one?

A good wristwatch does much more than just telling the time. Of course, they offer lot many features and facilities. Many expensive watches can display the phases of moon, the time of year, the precise second that just slipped away, and can even remind the wearer of an important appointment. They offer to set alarms, keep track of memorable occasions, and lot more. But this is not the all. Apart from their special features, the luxury watches in fact greatly complement the life of its wearers, acts as an accessory to their wardrobe, becomes an heirloom to pass along to future generations and, as James Bond has taught us, in a tight spot become a very handy knuckleduster.

The thought of knocking out teeth of someone in the party with $50,000 worth of watch wrapped around your wrist might seem a bit extravagant, but the smell of jealousy is really worthy, isn’t it? Watches in this price category are not only a symbol of life style but also are works of art. They are exquisite mechanisms created by talented craftsmen who do the seemingly impossible with gold, diamonds, springs, gears, and tiny tools. If anyone ever wondered why the best Swiss watches cost so much, they should just imagine a microchip, and then imagine it was made by hand, and then it would begin to comprehend the layers of delicacy, skill, and precision of the work, what is represented as the work of art.

The costs of the watches are mostly dominated by the number of complications they possess in their assembly. “Complications”, in fact are the mechanical functions of the watch other than the hours, minutes, and seconds. For many connoisseurs, what makes a watch desirable is the number of complications it can pack within its slender case. The more complications, the more valuable the watch becomes. In December, 1999, Sotheby’s sold a watch with 24 complications for $11 million. The watch that holds the record for the most complications is a pocket watch Patek Philippe created in honor of their 150th anniversary in 1989. It has 33 complications including the date of Easter and a celestial chart with 2,800 stars.

Other watch fanciers are less enthusiastic about the complications than they are about its shine, look, and attractiveness. These customers want diamonds on their diamonds and often favor larger watches that can better display them. They want the watch to be easily noticeable and show off their lifestyles in a party.

Whether it be the one entering first time in the world of high end luxury watches or the one collecting and enjoying them for many years, one of the best ways to buy is to go with a well known, well named, and trusted brand. But the best known luxury watch brands are not always the most sought after by collectors. Nor do the collectors demand the highest prices.

Recently, a survey was conducted by the Luxury Institute, a Manhattan-based research group that tracks the wealthiest consumers in the U.S. The survey was about the top 17 ultra luxury watchmakers that cater to most of the wealthiest consumers in the U.S. Rolex and Cartier were the two best-known brands. The surveyor selected only those consumers as the respondents who had a minimum net worth of $5 million. In terms of brand status and overall quality, the respondents to the survey said that the winners were Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Vacheron Constantin Malte Tonneau, and Franck Muller Crazy Hours.
